Yoga And Health Tips

It is important to keep good health in order to live a healthy and long life. Modern day living has become rather stressful and it is difficult for most people to keep themselves free of stress and strain. One form of exercise that makes both the mind and body relaxed and free of stress is yoga.

Yoga has its origins in ancient India and the word 'yoga' means 'to control'. Yoga can be explained as a form of physical exercise wherein breathing techniques are also used to keep the mind and the body active yet controlled. A person who practices yoga can never be obese and thus yoga can also be practiced to keep obesity at bay.

In general, yoga keeps the mind and body active and keeps the body free of diseases and the mind at peace with itself. Ancient practitioners of yoga attained peace and natural bliss by devoting time to maintain their spirit and psyche through yoga.

There are different branches of yoga and there are known to be eight such branches. The eight branches or limbs of yoga have their root in ancient Hindu philosophy. Yoga exercises have typical Sanskrit names and the eight limbs are referred to as 'Ashtanga Yoga'. The eight limbs of yoga are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Yama means abstaining from, Niyama means observing, Asana refers to the seated posture, Pranayama means life, Pratyahara can be understood as abstraction, Dharana is concentration, Dhyana is meditation personified and Samadhi is the ultimate in yoga as it liberates oneself.

The ultimate goal of yoga is Nirvana or spiritual bliss. When you are truly liberated from all worldly tension, you feel very happy and at peace with yourself. Yoga leads you to this unexplainable satisfaction. Life goes on smoothly and neatly. Your soul is at peace when your mind is at peace. Many people have been cured of various diseases after practicing yoga. Life style diseases like diabetes and hypertension can easily be set right by resorting to yoga.

Unlike other forms of exerce, like gym exercises, for example, yoga does not require much space. You can practice yoga in the confines of your home and all you need is a few feet of space and a yoga mat. You do not require expensive equipment and many square feet of space. All you need is the will to practice yoga.

Once you have set your mind to it, you can do it very easily. You can even practice by reading a book on yoga. However, it is best if you join a yoga club and assign yourself a yoga instructor who will guide you through the various exercises and correct you when you go wrong. Yoga is the simplest form of exercise with the most amazing results in the form of a trim and supple body and a relaxed and free mind. As in other forms of exercise, you need to follow a nutritious and balanced diet when you practice yoga. Oils and fats should be avoided.
